Fort Worth Zoo: Lions, Tigers and Bears are Just the Beginning

The Fort Worth Zoo has been around since 1909, making it the oldest zoo in all of Texas. Back when it first opened, however, the zoo looked a lot different. For one thing, its collection of resident animals was pretty paltry consisting of one lion, an alligator, two bear cubs, a coyote, a peacock, and a few rabbits. Today, the residents at Fort Worth Zoo number in the thousands, almost 7,000 to be more accurate.

And the zoo just continues to grow, debuting 16 new permanent exhibits in the past 20 years. There's the Chee-tos Cheetahs, where you can watch powerful felines run and prowl, as well as Parrot Paradise, a space where slightly smaller, colorful creatures flit from tree to tree. Don't miss a glimpse of the majestic lions, the waddling penguins, or the regal white tiger when you take a trip to the Fort Worth Zoo. If you grow tired of traipsing around, hop on the zoo's train back to the entrance on your way out.
